BRIEFCASE LOCAL MCDONALD'S MANAGERS LAUDED.

Three local McDonald's will display the Ray Kroc Ray Kroc (October 5, 1902 - January 14, 1984) took over and franchised the then single-restaurant McDonald's Corporation from 1955. (The first McDonald's restaurant was started by Richard and Maurice (Mac) McDonald in 1940.  Award amid the fryers and shake machines.

Managers Angel Martinez of Newhall, Hilda Pineda of Van Nuys and Luis Vargas Luis Vargas is a common name in Hispanic countries. Among the persons with this name are:
  • Luis Vargas (musician) - Bachata musician from Dominican Republic
  • Luis de Vargas - Renaissance painter from Seville, Spain
 of Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  all won the honor, accorded to restaurant heads who've excelled in operations, customer service and business expansion.

They received trophies, along with 126 other managers from across the country, $2,500 in cash and award pins.

Tenet takeover of USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  Norris OK

Tenet can take over Los Angeles' USC Norris Hospital, but the Santa Barbara-based chain must preserve cancer care, charity medical services and community benefit programs, the state attorney general said Friday.

Tenet Healthcare Tenet Healthcare Corporation (THC) is an operating company that owns and operates 57 hospitals in the United States [1]. It is based in Dallas, Texas. Its stock ticker symbol on the New York Stock Exchange is NYSE: THC.  Corp. will pay $35 million to buy the business operations of USC Norris Hospital, which treats cancer patients and conducts research trials, according to the Attorney General's Office.

USC will keep the building itself, in effect leasing it to Tenet, said Tom Dresslar of the Attorney General's Office.

Drug firm under grand jury probe

TRENTON, N.J. - Drug maker Schering-Plough Corp. said Friday that it is the target of a federal grand jury investigation into its marketing practices, whether it overcharged the government for medicines and possible obstruction of justice A criminal offense that involves interference, through words or actions, with the proper operations of a court or officers of the court.

The integrity of the judicial system depends on the participants' acting honestly and without fear of reprisals.

Schering-Plough received a letter Wednesday from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts informing it of the investigation, which focuses on the subsidiary running U.S. operations, Schering Corp., said spokeswoman Denise Foy.

ImClone to offer cancer test report

Doctors have long heralded Erbitux despite ImClone's problems, and analysts have said it has blockbuster potential. Published reports Friday said physicians who have seen the clinical data, to be presented at a medical conference in Chicago, claim it confirms Erbitux's effectiveness in treating colon cancer colon cancer, cancer of any part of the colon (often called the large intestine). Colon cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. .

Merck KGaA, ImClone's German partner, has already said it plans to use the trial results to file for approval to sell Erbitux in Europe. It is unclear, however, whether the data will be the foundation for a second try at U.S. approval. ImClone stock surged more than 21 percent on the news Friday.

Halliburton ready to settle lawsuits

HOUSTON - Halliburton Co. said Friday that it has agreed to pay $6 million to settle 20 shareholder lawsuits that accused it of using deceptive accounting practices while Vice President Dick Cheney led the company.

The lawsuits challenged the way the oilfield-services company counted revenue from cost overruns and change orders on long-term fixed-price construction projects.

Ernst & Young too cozy with clients?

WASHINGTON - In a rare move, federal regulators are seeking to have Ernst & Young suspended from accepting new corporate clients for six months because of the big accounting firm's alleged failure to remain completely independent from companies whose books it audits.

The Securities and Exchange Commission contends in a legal proceeding that Ernst & Young's internal controls are inadequate to prevent its auditors from becoming too cozy with client companies.
