 unemployment rate fell to 6.5 percent in May from 7.1 percent the same month a year ago and was unchanged from April, the state said Monday.

Civilian employment grew by 7,000 - to 4.5 percent last month, said the Employment Development Department.

Statewide, the seasonally adjusted jobless rate was 6.2 percent in May, down from 6.8 percent a year ago and unchanged from the previous month.

The estimated national unemployment rate was 5.6 percent last month, as in April, and 6.1 percent a year ago.

Between May 2003 and May 2004, total nonfarm employment in Los Angeles County gained 10,900 jobs - a 0.3 percent increase.

The largest nonfarm increase was in the leisure and hospitality sector, gaining 15,800 jobs. Most of those jobs - 11,200 of them - involved the food or accommodations industries.

The chain has not yet announced which of its 24 stores it intends to sell to the home-improvement retailer, but Thousand Oaks economic development manager Gary Wartik said his office was in talks with both parties.
