Wood Ranch BBQ BBQ barbecue  adding two spots

AGOURA HILLS - Local favorite Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill, Inc. is growing once again. The chain, which currently boasts six spots, announced Wednesday that it would add two additional restaurants.

The first will fire up its grill at the Grove at Farmers Market in March and the next will open in June in Rancho Santa Margarita.

Simulations Plus boosts software

LANCASTER - Simulations Plus Inc. is releasing an upgrade to its QMPRPlus software.

The company announced Wednesday that the chemical analysis software would now be able to predict the percent of plasma protein binding A drug's efficacy may be affected by the degree to which it binds to the proteins within blood plasma. KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Sprint Corp., citing the weak economy and ``a rapidly changing industry landscape,'' announced Wednesday that it will lay off about 6,000 employees, or 7 percent of its work force, and eliminate 1,500 contract workers' jobs.

The company also said it would discontinue its money-losing voice and high-speed Internet unit, ION.

The announcements came as Sprint, the nation's third-largest long- distance provider, reported lower third-quarter earnings and a loss for its PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995. The company also said it is combining its consumer and small-business long-distance operations into one group called ``mass markets'' with a focus on acquiring customers through bundled offerings.

Overall, the layoffs and restructuring could save Sprint an estimated $1 billion by 2002, the company said.

Dana auto parts to close up plants

TOLEDO, Ohio - Auto parts supplier Dana Corp. will cut about 11,000 jobs, or about 15 percent of its work force, through plant closings and consolidations, the company announced Wednesday.

The reductions come on top of about 10,000 job cuts made within the past two years because of an oversupply o·ver·sup·ply

Dana, which makes parts such as brakes and axles, currently employs about 75,000 people and operates about 300 facilities in 34 countries.

The company did not say which plants would be closed. About 30 plants are being evaluated, and Dana also will look to hired outsiders to handle some operations now handled by Dana employees, Magliochetti said.

EchoStar raising cash for DirecTV

Hoping to bolster its effort to acquire the DirecTV satellite television business from General Motors, EchoStar Communications is negotiating $5.5 billion in additional financing for the deal, executives close to the company said Wednesday.

By adding a significant amount of cash to its previous all-stock offer, EchoStar might be better able to compete with its rival for DirecTV, News Corp.
