BRIEFCASE HAMER FIRM GETS AWARD FOR 9TH YEAR.

MISSION HILLS - For the ninth year, Hamer Toyota has been named a recipient of the Toyota Motor Sales President's Award The President's Award may mean:
  • Gaisce - The President's Award, Republic of Ireland
  • NAACP Image Award - President's Award, United States
  • Rashtrapati Award - Award given by the President of India (Rashtrapati is Hindi for President)
, which is presented to a select group of 342 Toyota dealerships across the country.

The award is the highest honor a dealership can receive from Toyota. In order to qualify as an award winner, a dealership must excel in each of a series of categories, including customer sales satisfaction and customer service satisfaction.

 bonds get Moody's upgrade

Moody's Investor Service said Friday it has upgraded the rating on two types of Metropolitan Transportation Authority bonds.

Moody's bumped up the rating of the MTA's Proposition A First Tier Senior Sales Tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  Revenue Refunding Bonds to Aa3, up a notch from A1. It also upgraded the rating for the MTA's First Tier Second Senior Bonds, which are secured by Proposition A sales tax money, to A1 from A2.

The rating upgrades are likely to mean lower interest costs on future Proposition A bond issues, according to according to

Moody's said the ratings upgrades reflect credit strengths, including a ``large, diverse sales tax base (that) has shown resiliency in the current economic slowdown.''

Gas prices drop as demand eases

WASHINGTON - The U.S. economy grew at a healthy 4 percent rate from July through September, the government said Friday, but analysts remained concerned that rising unemployment and weak consumer spending Consumer demand or consumption is also known as personal consumption expenditure. The Commerce Department's final estimate of activity in the July-September showed no change in the overall figure from the figure released a month ago, although individual components of growth shifted slightly.

Consumer spending rose at an even-faster 4.2 percent rate with purchases of big-ticket items such as cars surging ahead at a 22.8 percent, reflecting cut-rate financing offers.

Coke asks judge to quash claim

ATLANTA - Coca-Cola asked a judge to toss out a claim by a water filtration company it owned more than 20 years ago that is seeking $10 million from Coke to pay for legal expenses related to an asbestos lawsuit.

The world's largest beverage maker said it has no past, present or future responsibility to pay for expenses incurred by Milwaukee-based Aqua- Chem Inc.

Coke filed the complaint Friday against Aqua-Chem in Fulton County

Atlanta-based Coke bought Aqua-Chem in 1970 because it was interested in the company's water filtration technologies. Coke sold the business in 1981 to focus on its core business.

Skandia will sell its U.S. operations

 group Skandia said Friday it will sell its U.S. operations to Prudential Financial for about $1.15 billion in a bid to pay down its debt.

The deal, which needs regulatory approval, is expected to close during the second quarter of 2003. Prudential is one of the United States' largest insurance companies.

Prudential is also assuming a liability of about $115 million in the deal.

The two biggest U.S. credit ratings agencies said after the deal was announced that they were reviewing the possibility of raising their ratings on Skandia's debt.
