NEWTON, Mass. - AMC Entertainment said Friday that it has agreed to buy General Cinema as part of that company's Chapter 11 reorganization plan A scheme authorized by federal law and promulgated by the president whereby he or she alters the structure of federal agencies to promote government efficiency and economy through a transfer, consolidation, coordination, authorization, or abolition of functions. .

Under the agreement, AMC would pay GC Companies Inc.'s creditors an estimated $175 million to $195 million in cash and stock. The final amount depends on a bankruptcy court's determination of claim amounts.

Halliburton value falls on verdicts

DALLAS - Shares of Halliburton Co. plunged more than 40 percent Friday after the oil field-services company revealed that a jury ruled against it in an asbestos-related lawsuit.

A six-member state court jury in Baltimore found a former subsidiary of Halliburton's Dresser Industries Dresser Industries was a multinational corporation headquartered in Dallas, Texas, which provided a wide range of technology, products, and services used for developing energy and natural resources.  unit and other companies responsible for the asbestos exposure of five people and awarded them $40 million.

Halliburton said its portion of the verdict against Dresser, which Halliburton acquired in 1998, totaled $30 million.

Trade panel urges steel import fees

WASHINGTON - A federal trade panel recommended a range of tariffs and quotas on imported steel Friday to boost the battered domestic industry.

Foreign producers and U.S. companies that use imported steel condemned the move as protectionism that will drive up prices for American consumers.

The International Trade Commission recommended the tariffs, ranging from 5 percent to 40 percent, for 16 steel product lines.
