BRIEFCASE BALLOTS TO GO OUT ON SAG DUES HIKE.

Byline: - Staff and Wire Services

Ballots requesting a dues increase will be mailed today to Screen Actors Guild members, the group announced.

If approved by the membership, SAG dues would increase to $130 a year from the current $100, and the initiation fee would rise to $2,085 from $1,356.

In addition to the 30 percent increase in annual dues, the proposal would increase dues on earnings up to $200,000 to 1.95 percent from 1.85 percent.

Actors earning more than $200,000 a year would face a doubling in work dues to 1 percent from .5 percent, with a cap at $500,000.

The last time SAG increased dues was in 1999. The previous increase occurred in 1987.

The board voted 80 percent to 20 percent to seek the increases.

Votes are due back by May 28.

Intel shifts focus to new processors

SAN JOSE - Switching gears for its next-generation microprocessors, Intel Corp. said it has canceled an existing project so that development efforts can be focused on a more advanced technology that's making faster progress than expected.

The new processors, expected by 2005, will sport dual computing engines instead of the single core of today's Pentium 4 processors. The move will boost performance over existing hardware, Intel spokeswoman Laura Anderson said Friday.

Today's single-core Pentium 4s are enabled with a technology, called Hyper-Threading, that enhances performance by essentially tricking the operating system into behaving as though there are two processors instead of one.
