Continental will extend ticket sale

HOUSTON - Continental Airlines' Web site was inoperative Void; not active; ineffectual.

The term inoperative is commonly used to indicate that some force, such as a statute or contract, is no longer in effect and legally binding upon the persons who were to be, or had been, affected by it.

Verizon will drop cell phone fight

Verizon Wireless said on Tuesday that it would drop its opposition to a federal plan to allow callers to keep their wireless phone numbers when they switch carriers. The about-face by Verizon, the nation's largest mobile-phone company, probably means that other mobile phone operators will have little choice but to acquiesce in the arrangement.

The FCC was created under the U.S.  regulations scheduled to take effect on Nov. 24 and will end its aggressive legal and legislative campaign against the regulations.

Several competitors in the wireless industry said they were surprised by Verizon's announcement and said they would continue to fight the mandate without Verizon's cooperation. The industry has argued that the FCC lacks legal jurisdiction to impose portability, and that carrying out the rules will cost the industry hundreds of millions of dollars.

Freddie Mac Freddie Mac: see Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation.  bill gets little support

WASHINGTON - Key lawmakers appeared cool Tuesday toward new House legislation prescribing tighter regulation and a change in oversight in response to mortgage titan Freddie Mac's leadership and accounting problems.

The measure was proposed by Rep. It would abolish the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight, the agency of the Department of Housing and Urban Development that supervises both mortgage-dealing companies.
