BRIEFCASE 99 CENTS LEADERS DECLARE 4-3 SPLIT.

COMMERCE - Commerce-based 99 Cents Only Stores announced Tuesday that its board of directors declared a four-for-three stock split on its common stock, payable on April 3 to shareholders of record on March 25.

The company previously had about 52.3 million shares of common stock outstanding. The split increases the number of shares currently outstanding to 69.7 million.

The company said the stock split was part of ``continuing efforts to broaden our stock's marketability and liquidity.''

The company operates 130 retail stores in Southern and Central California Central California can refer to one of several divisions or regions of the U.S state of California:

JAKKS advances on Toymax buyout

MALIBU - Malibu-based JAKKS Pacific JAKKS Pacific, Inc. NASDAQ: JAKK is is a multi-brand company that designs and markets a broad range of toys and consumer products and is based in Malibu, California. Its product categories include action figures, art activity kits, stationery, writing instruments, performance  Inc. announced that it completed phase one of its proposed acquisition of Toymax International Inc.

Toymax's principal stockholders sold 8.1 million shares of common stock to JAKKS Pacific in exchange for $3 in cash and 0.0798 shares of JAKKS common stock per Toymax share.

The aggregate purchase price was $24.3 million in cash and 646,384 shares of JAKKS Pacific common stock.

In phase two, which JAKKS expects to be completed by the end of the second quarter, JAKKS will purchase the remaining 4.1 million outstanding common shares of Toymax. For each common share of Toymax, shareholders will likewise be offered $3 in cash and 0.0798 shares of JAKKS common stock.

A source close to the talks said Tuesday the two companies were close to a deal, although the details of a proposed agreement were not known.

Disney and EchoStar were set to square off in court Monday. But a federal court judge agreed to postpone the hearing for one week, until March 18, to give the companies time to negotiate.

The delay keeps ABC Family on the Dish Network until at least next week.

Amgen donation will help seniors
