The cattle ranch was introduced from Latin America to Texas and the plains of the W United States and Canada.  Road residents six months ahead of schedule, as city engineers predict an early finish next spring.

Two 500-foot roadway extensions that will connect each end of the 840-foot concrete bridge with Via Princessa and Circle J Ranch Road are expected to open to traffic by March, he said.

City engineers inspected the unfinished bridge Monday to make sure there was no damage from Saturday's Hector earthquake, which registered 7.1 on the Richter Scale Richter scale (rĭk`tər), measure of the magnitude of seismic waves from an earthquake, devised in 1935 by the American seismologist Charles F. Richter (1900–1985).  and was more than 100 miles away.

Overnight crews temporarily closed San Fernando Road beneath the bridge last week to remove wood scaffolding that had set the bridge's shape. Traffic on San Fernando Road was detoured around Circle J Ranch Road to 15th Street.

The project was slated to be completed late in the summer of 2000.

``We're really far ahead of schedule. I think it's because we've had good cooperation by everyone involved with this project,'' Mardirosian said.

The city and the developer have worked with the Army Corps of Engineers, CalTrans, Metrolink - and state flood control authorities, because the bridge crosses the Santa Clara Santa Clara, city, Cuba

, Southern California's last natural river.

Although the bridge initially will open with single travel lanes, its 76-foot width will enable the city to create double travel lanes in each direction when traffic there becomes heavier. A 12-foot-wide bike path will run alongside the roadways approaching the bridge and over the bridge.

The new bridge mainly will serve Circle J Ranch Road residents after opening, Mardirosian said, but noted that it also is planned as an eventual connector for a roadway the city hopes to build between Wiley Canyon Road in Newhall and Via Princessa in Canyon Country.

Of the project's total $7.5 million cost, about $4.1 million is being funded through developer fees, while the city is funding the remainder, officials said.
