Crews are scheduled to work at night on the project to lessen the impact on one of the busiest stretches of road in Santa Clarita.

The bridge is being widened from six to eight lanes in a project due for completion in December 2005. The $7 million project is being funded primarily by the federal government with additional money from the city of Santa Clarita and from developers planning thousands of homes in the Saugus area.

The first phase of the work involves removing the center median to create space that will be used as traffic lanes to make up for the loss of outer lanes during construction.

City officials warn that traffic delays are likely and suggest that motorists use alternate routes An official alternate route is a bannered highway that provides an alternate alignment for a highway. Originally, the term for these routes was "optional"; but in 1959, the designation became alternate. .
