BRIDGE CABLE TV GRANTED PERMISSION TO RETRANSMIT WNYW-TV

POTTSTOWN, Pa., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Customers of Bridge Cable TV will continue to receive WNYW-TV over their cable systems at least until Dec. 6.
Bridge Cable TV and WNYW (Channel 5) have signed an interim agreement that will permit Bridge Cable to carry the broadcast station until Dec. 6, 1993, while a final agreement is negotiated, said Debra Krzywicki, corporate vice president for The Lenfest Group, the parent company of Bridge Cable. WNYW-TV is a Fox Broadcasting affiliate based in New York. The station can be seen on channel 5 in the Bridge Cable system.
"We are certainly happy we will be able to continue to deliver WNYW to our customers," Krzywicki said.
The 1992 Cable Act includes a provision known as retransmission consent. Commercial broadcast stations that choose retransmission consent can require payment from cable companies in exchange for granting the cable company permission to carry the station on its cable system. Cable companies must receive permission to carry a broadcast signal by midnight Oct. 5, 1993. If an agreement is not reached, a broadcaster can require a cable company to remove the station from its lineup. Any agreements reached between a cable company and broadcaster are for a three-year period ending in 1996.
Terms of the interim agreement between Bridge Cable TV and WNYW are not being disclosed, Krzywicki said. "We look forward to reaching a final agreement with WNYW," she said.
Bridge Cable TV serves about 3,000 customers in Hunterdon and Mercer counties in New Jersey. Bridge Cable is a division of the Pottstown- based Lenfest group. The Lenfest Group serves more than 400,000 customers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey through Bridge Cable, Suburban Cable and South Jersey Cablevision.
