After a summer of brickwork, Brecht went on to enjoy a stellar season for the 9-1 Indians, seeded fourth in the Southern Section Division II playoffs. Brecht caught 14 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown and rushed 127 times for 906 yards and six touchdowns.

The Indians open the postseason tonight at 7:30 at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. The coaching staff is convinced Brecht would have reached 1,000 yards with at least 20 touchdowns rushing if they gave him the ball more. As it was, he averaged 8.4 yards a carry in the five Foothill League games.

Since the idea is to mix up the plays so no one can be neutralized, Brecht didn't get as many carries as other Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. ``Coach tries to get me the ball as much as I can. I get the ball enough,'' he said.

It didn't appear Brecht would have a large role on the team.He always could run the ball. But to be an integral part of Hart's offense, a running back also must catch.

``We were worried he couldn't play back there because he couldn't catch,'' offensive coordinator An offensive coordinator typically refers to the coach on a football team in the National Football League or College football who is in charge of the offense. This position aids the head coach by designing and scripting plays, delegating work to offensive position coaches during  Dean Herrington said.

Last year against Palmdale, Brecht dropped a pass in the end zone in a game Hart lost.He would later practice catching passes from quarterbacks David Neill David Neill (born July 17 1980[]) was an American college football quarterback for the University of Nevada. In 1998 he set an NCAA record for most touchdown passes in a season by a freshman with 29 thrown.  and Kyle Boller, but balls would often bounce off his hands.

``I was looking to run before I caught it,'' he said. ``I'd get it in my hands and it'd slip.''

Things changed when Brecht's brother, Larry, showed him a videotape of an interview Jerry Rice gave. In it, Rice explained he learned how to catch from his father throwing bricks to him when he was about seven years old. If he didn't keep his eyes on the brick, he wouldn't catch it and could hurt himself.

Brecht thought it was worth a try.
