BRENDLE'S NAMES NEW CEO AS DOUG BRENDLE REMAINS
 CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
ELKIN, N.C., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Brendle's Incorporated (NASDAQ-NMS: BRDL) announced that Douglas D. Brendle will shift his day-to-day management responsibilities to a new chief executive, but will remain as the company's chairman of the board. The decision was announced following the board of directors meeting on June 2.
The company's directors appointed Walter A. Jones as president and chief executive officer, effective immediately. Jones, a principal of The GDL Group, has served with Brendle in the executive office since February 1992.
"Doug has been and will continue to be a tremendous help in repositioning the company in the marketplace," said Jones, who will oversee all company operations and report to the Board.
"Doug still will be involved in the business because his knowledge and experience are invaluable and it's near and dear to him," Jones added. "But the intensity of day-to-day operating responsibilities won't be there so he can pursue other personal interests he enjoys as well." Brendle underwent open-heart surgery earlier this year following a heart attack.
Brendle joined the family business in the early 1950s, when it was primarily a wholesale grocery business. He developed the idea to move the company into selling household items and founded Brendle's Incorporated as a catalog showroom business in the early 1960s. This idea spurred dramatic company growth under his leadership for nearly three decades.
Now, the company has revamped its merchandising strategy to meet marketplace demand.
Brendle's recently announced its plan to shift over the next two to three years from a discount/catalog retailer to a focused specialty gift, jewelry, leisure living and home accessories retailer. The company also is planning new customer services to differentiate itself from its competitors. In May, the company arranged a $56.9 million loan from its lenders which will enable Brendle's to execute its strategic plan.
Brendle's operates 52 stores in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia.
The GDL Group is a management consulting company hired by Brendle's in December 1991 to assist with repositioning the company for improved performance and profitability.
