estimates that each year nearly 175,000 American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer,'' said Dee Winsman, chairwoman of Zonta's Healthy Woman's Day committee. ``Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in women today, after lung cancer lung cancer, cancer that originates in the tissues of the lungs. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States in both men and women. Like other cancers, lung cancer occurs after repeated insults to the genetic material of the cell. , and is the most common cancer among women excluding nonmelanoma skin cancers.''

According to Winsman, the incidence of breast cancer in women increases with age, rising sharply after the age of 40, and three-quarters of the invasive forms of the disease occur in women over 50.

The good news is that when symptoms are diagnosed in the early stages, treatment dramatically increases the survival rate, which can be as high as 96 percent, Winsman added.

During Healthy Woman's Day, women will be able to discuss breast self-examination techniques and personal findings with the health care professional that performs the breast exam. The Zonta and Partnered for Progress grant also allows for follow-up diagnostic exams such as mammograms, as well as referral assistance.

There are 150 appointments available for the free breast exams. To schedule an appointment, call (661) 284-6135.
