``We were supposed to go to court with Vince about who owns the name and royalties and all that stuff and things were going to get really ugly,'' said Tommy Lee This article is about the American drummer Tommy Lee. For other uses, see Tommy.

But as it turned out, a few weeks before the court date, a problem developed with John Corabi John Corabi (born on April 26, 1959 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a heavy metal singer and guitarist who has worked with such bands as Angora, The Scream, Mötley Crüe, Union and ESP (both with former KISS lead guitarist Bruce Kulick), Ratt (as a lead guitarist), Twenty 4 Seven , the singer who'd replaced Neil on the last Motley Crue CD.

``His performances weren't up to par and he's a really good singer, so that freaked us out. Come to find out, he was kind of blaming himself for our last album not succeeding. He said, `Your fans aren't going to accept another version of Motley Crue and I don't want to bring your careers down. Maybe you should get Vince back.'

``None of us wanted to go to court, and Nikki (Sixx) and Vince got together behind the lawyers' backs, so they could actually communicate.''

The group heads out June 11 to do several ``live listening events'' for its new ``Generation Swine'' CD. ``Instead of having a regular listening party, we're going to play the material live,'' says Lee. Going and going

Uma Thurman had better have her track shoes on. She and Ralph Fiennes started the big-screen version of the vintage ``The Avengers'' TV series Monday in London. She'll work on the film until Thursday afternoon, jet to L.A. for the ``Batman & Robin'' press junket, spend the weekend pitching the movie to the media - then rush back to ``The Avengers'' action. And that's not all. She'll spend her free time tub-thumping for the epic in Europe.

Staying and staying

After a tough season of ``Cybill,'' Cybill Shepherd has decided to do nothing this summer but kick back. No TV movies, no films. Not even the New York singing gig she was planning for a while.

Jessica Lange is taking the summer off, relaxing with Sam Shepard and their clan at home in Minnesota. Lange, who worked 14 months without a break, will be seeing the fruit of her labor before too long. Disney is supposed to release ``1,000 Acres,'' in which Lange teams with Michelle Pfeiffer, late this year. ``Blood Line'' (formerly dubbed ``Kilronan''), is slated for unveiling in early '98 with Gwyneth Paltrow, and the adaptation of Honore de Balzac's sexy comedy ``Cousin Bette'' will hit theaters in September.

The big-screen scene

Production has started in New York on ``Meet Joe Black,'' with the beauty from ``The Rock,'' Claire Forlani, portraying Brad Pitt's love in the film loosely inspired by ``Death Takes a Holiday.'' Anthony Hopkins also stars, as a global media mogul - but not a deaf media mogul as we reported.
