Odds and ends from around the Valley:

Matt Fairlee, a 10-year-old fifth-grader at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran School Lutheran schools and education were a priority for Lutherans who emigrated to the United States and Australia from Germany and Scandinavia. One of the first things they did was to create schools for their children.  in West Hills, ran into a little trouble last week riding a covered wagon covered wagon: see Conestoga wagon; prairie schooner.  along the Oregon Trail Oregon Trail, overland emigrant route in the United States from the Missouri River to the Columbia River country (all of which was then called Oregon). The pioneers by wagon train did not, however, follow any single narrow route. .

``Someone in our wagon train wagon train, in U.S. history, a group of covered wagons used to convey people and supplies to the West before the coming of the railroad. The wagon replaced the pack, or horse, train in land commerce as soon as proper roads had been built.  got burned after falling into a campfire, and we had to figure out how they would have treated burns in the 1800s,'' he said.

``I went to the library and learned that the pioneers would have made a poultice poultice /poul·tice/ (pol´tis) a soft, moist mass about the consistency of cooked cereal, spread between layers of muslin, linen, gauze, or towels and applied hot to a given area in order to create moist local heat or counterirritation.  out of sour milk Noun 1. sour milk - milk that has turned sour

 and clay.''

Yeah, that's what I thought, too. A poultice. Worked every time for the pioneers.

So how many 10-year-olds do you think even know that a poultice is a ``soft, usually heated and sometimes medicated medicated /med·i·cat·ed/ (med´i-kat?id) imbued with a medicinal substance.

The kids in Marie Brauer's fifth-grade class do.

If the mark of a good teacher is to challenge her students, and keep them interested in learning right up until the last school bell rings before summer vacation Summer vacation (also called summer holidays or summer break) is a vacation in the summertime between school years in which students are off for 3 months, depending on the country and district. , Brauer is a great teacher.

The kids in her class refuse to let her retire this month after 44 years of teaching until she gets the last covered wagon in their class safely along the Oregon Trail.

Every year, Brauer has her class re-enact re·en·act also re-en·act

the journey of the pioneers over the Oregon Trail, down to selecting the supplies they'll need and learning how to deal with unexpected emergencies along the way.

Like someone falling into the campfire.

``Mrs. Brauer teaches her students in a creative way, not just by reading about the pioneers in a book, but by imagining what life must have been like on a wagon train,'' said Danielle Fairlee, Matt's mom.

Her wagon train trips along the Oregon Trail are legendary at the school, says Principal Mary Ann Friedrich.

``I taught in the classroom next to Marie before I became principal, and the thing I saw that made her an outstanding teacher in my eyes In My Eyes was a Boston straight edge band that spearheaded the 1997 youth crew revival along with Ten Yard Fight, Bane, The Trust, Fastbreak and Floorpunch. The band and its members were a part of the hot bed that was the Boston music scene in the late 90's and early 2000's.  was her concern and dedication to the students who tended to struggle,'' she said.

This Sunday, more than 100 students, parents, faculty and alumni will attend a special retirement celebration and dinner for Brauer, who started her career in a one-room, rural school house in eastern North Dakota.

``I'll miss seeing that light in the eyes of a child when they learn something they've been struggling with,'' Marie said Thursday. ``And I'll miss all the kids who come back to say hi.''

From a lot of parents in the Valley, Marie - thank you for all those pioneer wagon trains over the Oregon Trail.

My old buddy Jacques Hay, owner of Award Winners in Reseda, is up to good again. He was having a pizza with Josh Weisman, a special education student at Miller High, a few weeks ago when he came up with another great idea.

Like most schools in L.A., the Reseda special-ed school could use some extra classroom funds so Hay got a few of his friends to adopt a class at the school for $250 a year.

``I could see that Josh's class needed some funds for daily expenses so we started a 'Leave No Class Behind' program,'' Hay said.

``Anyone can visit a class and adopt it for $250 for the whole year, and I'll throw in a special plaque for them.''

Bruce Meyer, an administrative assistant at the school, said there are 19 classes at Miller attended by special-ed students ages 15 to 22.

``Just give us a call and we'll set up an appointment so they can see what class they want to adopt,'' Meyer said. ``The money will go to provide individual help to our kids.''

If you're interested, give Meyer a call at (818) 885-1646. Or call Jacques at (818) 349-3932.

The results are in on last weekend's Operation Gratitude care package drive for our troops over the Memorial Day weekend. It was the most successful drive ever, said founder Carolyn Blashek.

``We were absolutely rocking. More than 1,500 volunteers showed up, many of them for more than one day. We shipped out 19,630 boxes, our biggest effort ever.

``Please say thank you to all your readers,'' Carolyn said. ``They were incredible.''

As always.

And finally, last week I ran out of space in giving recognition to many of the people who made Ann Kinzle's surprise 78th birthday party a success.

Ann's been the driving force for the past 21 years behind the Reseda Chamber of Commerce and so many neighborhood issues in her community. More than 100 people showed up for the party at Canoas Banquet Hall, where Ann received a new car on her birthday.

Deputy Chief Ron Bergmann, Cmdr. Val Paniccia, and Capt. John Sherman of West Valley LAPD were there, along with firefighters from Station 73 in Reseda.

Also attending were members of the Reseda Women's Club, Rayna Gabin, Nancy Hodges, Frank Bush, Lillie Cordero, Walt and Nancy Sweeney, Claire and Jim Livingood, and Virginia Green.

All of them and more paying tribute to a special woman who has made her community a better place to live.
