BRATTON, HAHN OFF TO D.C.

Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Mayor James Hahn and Police Chief William Bratton are set to meet today with law enforcement officials in the nation's capital, where they hope to extract promises of more federal assistance to fight street-gang crime.

``The main focus really is to try and get money from federal law enforcement to help us deal with the violent gang-crime problem here in Los Angeles,'' Hahn said Monday, before leaving. ``We're talking to the FBI. We're talking to the Drug Enforcement Administration The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) was established in 1973 by President richard m. nixon as part of the Justice Department, thus uniting a number of federal drug agencies that had often worked at cross-purposes. . We're talking to the Department of Justice and (the federal Bureau of) Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.''

Last month, Hahn announced he had secured the promise of support from the regional heads of those departments to lend some of their resources to fight gangs.

On Wednesday, Hahn and Bratton will spend time talking to other city officials about airport security and gang crime and domestic terrorism at the U.S. Conference of Mayors. They are also set to meet with Tom Ridge, director of Homeland Security.
