To reach his goal of becoming an Eagle Scout, Brandon had to master the skills of leadership, service and outdoor know-how and had to practice good citizenship and ethical behavior. He worked for two years to complete the requirements. After earning 30 merit badges - exceeding the minimum requirement of 21 - Brandon then had to complete his Eagle Scout leadership service project The Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project is the opportunity for a Scout in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of his community. . He chose Tippi Hedren's Shambala Wildlife Preserve in Acton for his project. With the help of 11 fellow Scouts and 16 other helpers, Brandon organized the clearing of brush and debris from the preserve to protect animals and their habitats in case of fire. The project took eight hours, which included time for explanation, instruction and assistance, which Brandon oversaw. When the task was complete, Shambala had a new fire clearance and a grateful staff, which invited Brandon and his group to return for a visit.
