BRANCH TO OPEN 7 DAYS; SUNDAYS ADDED TO LANCASTER'S LIBRARY SCHEDULE.

The Lancaster branch library will be open Sundays beginning July 11, returning a service that was lost five years ago amid Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County budget cuts, officials said Friday.

Using $223,000 secured in the 1998-99 state budget, the Lancaster library will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays, giving the branch seven-day-a-week service. The state money is part of a $500,000 grant from the Office of Education that Assemblyman George Runner George C. Runner, Jr. (born March 25 1952 in Scotia, New York) is a Republican California State Senator, who represents the 17th Senate District, which includes portions of Los Angeles County, San Bernardino County and Ventura County. , R-Lancaster, and Sen. W.J. ``Pete'' Knight, R-Palmdale, secured during budget negotiations last fall.

The grant will provide funding for the Sunday service for up to five years. Aside from a $40,000 allocation to expand library service in Gorman, the rest of the $500,000 grant will be used to buy equipment, furniture and fixtures for the Lancaster facility.

Sunday library service in Lancaster was a victim of state budget woes in the early 1990s. The state shifted property tax revenue from counties and special districts to make up its own budget deficit, putting a strain on libraries and other local services.
