A CHILD of three was fighting for her life last night after being struck down with meningitis. The girl, from Millisle, Co Down, was in a critical condition at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. She was admitted on Sunday with meningococcal septicaemia septicaemia or septicemia Noun an infection of the blood which develops in a wound [Greek sēptos decayed + haima blood] septicemia, septicaemia , the local health board revealed. Health authorities who issued antibiotics to her family reassured villagers there is a low risk of catching the disease. Leaflets were also given to parents of other children at Millisle Primary School, where the child attends nursery. Dr Philip Donaghy, the Board's consultant in communicable disease control, urged the public not to panic. He said: "There is a small risk this can be passed on to close family members of patients and we have provided them with antibiotics. These are not provided to people beyond the immediate family because of an even smaller risk level. "This is in line with national expert guidance on the best management of patients in this situation." Staff at the school have been told of the measures taken by the Board but last night refused to comment. Symptoms of meningococcal include nausea, a dislike of bright lights and a blotchy blotch n. 1. A spot or blot; a splotch. 2. A discoloration on the skin; a blemish. 3.
