BRADLEY STILL LISTED AS SERIOUS AFTER STROKE; DOCTORS CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC.

A surgical procedure performed to improve blood supply to the heart by creating new routes for blood flow when one or more of the coronary arteries become obstructed. The surgery involves removing a healthy blood vessel from another part of the body, such as the leg, and grafting it onto the heart to circumvent the blocked artery. However, Bradley, 78, remained in serious condition at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center, hospital officials said.

``He has had brief moments of being awake and alert,'' said Fred Alexander, Bradley's private physician. ``He recognizes and acknowledges family members with a smile and hand-holding.''

Although doctors said it would be hard to predict Bradley's long-term recovery, they said his vital signs were good, giving them reason to be optimistic.

Bradley suffered at stroke at 5 a.m. Thursday, a day after undergoing triple bypass surgery. He had been hospitalized following a heart attack March 20.

The stroke left Bradley unable to speak and immobile
