However, Bradley, 78, remained in serious condition at Kaiser Permanente Kaiser Permanente is an integrated managed care organization, based in Oakland, California, founded in 1945 by industrialist Henry J. ``He has had brief moments of being awake and alert,'' said Fred Alexander, Bradley's private physician. ``He recognizes and acknowledges family members with a smile and hand-holding.''

Although doctors said it would be hard to predict Bradley's long-term recovery, they said his vital signs were good, giving them reason to be optimistic.
