BRADLEY LANDFILL CLASH TO PIT PROS, CONS TONIGHT.

Byline: Kerry Cavanaugh Staff Writer

SUN VALLEY - Armed with statistics and the support of a powerful lawmaker, Sun Valley residents are prepared to do battle tonight with the owner of the Bradley Landfill over the firm's controversial plans to expand the dump.

The California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  Integrated Management Board will be taking testimony from both sides on plans by Waste Management Inc. to increase the size of the dump and extend its life span to 2007. And while no decision is expected tonight, opponents and supporters are treating the hearing as their best chance to convince state officials that Bradley should stay or go.

State Sen. Richard Alarcon, D-Van Nuys, plans to announce legislation that would tighten the requirements for permitting urban landfills.

Leaders of the East Valley Coalition, a community group that has long fought to close the landfill, will give a multimedia presentation detailing previous problems at Bradley. They also plan to raise concerns about air quality, landfill gas violations, dust and alarmingly high rates of asthma in the area.

``We've done a lot of research, and we have a lot of ammo,'' Coalition President Carol Ann ANN, Scotch law. And letters written by nearly 100 students at nearby Fernangeles Elementary School elementary school: see school. , asking city and state officials to close the landfill, also will be presented at the hearing.

``We want to close the Bradley dump. It stinks bad. It's not healthy for us to breathe. We could get very sick,'' wrote Kevin Pocasangre, a student in teacher David Ross' third-grade class.

For its part, Waste Management has been encouraging its customers and 215 employees to support its efforts to expand the dump. The company also stepped up public outreach Outreach is an effort by an organization or group to connect its ideas or practices to the efforts of other organizations, groups, specific audiences or the general public.  by offering public tours and hosting an informational meeting and rally Tuesday night, complete with taco truck and mariachi mariachi

``It's really important that you're out there because the people who have to decide yes or no on a permit, they need to hear both sides of the story to make a really good decision,'' Waste Management District Manager Doug Corcoran told the crowd.

The hearing is being held at the request of Alarcon, and was prompted by community outrage OUTRAGE. A grave injury; a serious wrong. This is a generic word which is applied to everything, which is injurious, in great degree, to the honor or rights of another.  over a permit revision that Waste Management filed in 1998, seeking to increase Bradley's elevation elevation, vertical distance from a datum plane, usually mean sea level to a point above the earth. Often used synonymously with altitude, elevation is the height on the earth's surface and altitude, the height in space above the surface.  by 43 feet, expand the total acreage by 10 percent and extend the dump's life span until 2007.

City officials approved the plan, saying the revisions were only minor. But state regulators disagreed and found Waste Management in violation for reshaping the landfill without making the necessary changes to its permit.

Its permit application now seeks to establish a total capacity of 38.6 million cubic yards. That represents an increase in volume of 1 million to 3.3 million cubic yards in the portion known as Bradley West, which is the newer section of the landfill.

The original landfill, Bradley East, was closed a few years ago, before it was full. Waste Management said it is just moving the leftover volume from Bradley East to Bradley West.

But the permit revision is just one issue to be considered.

In addition to enlarging ENLARGING. Extending or making more comprehensive; as an enlarging statute, which is one extending the common law.  the landfill, Waste Management also wants to build a trash-transfer station on the site when it closes in 2007. The city is just beginning environmental review on that project.
