BRADLEES INITIATES TORNADO RELIEF

    BRAINTREE, Mass., Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Bradlees, Inc. (NYSE: BLE) today announced its plans to aid the victims of the recent tornado disaster in Colonial Heights and Petersburg, Va.  Starting today, such items as clothes, toiletries, tools, cleaning supplies and other goods will be sent to the company's Petersburg location for distribution by the local Red Cross chapter.  The company also announced that it would be making a donation of $5,000 to the Operation Relief fund on Virginia's WRIC TV-8 tornado relief telethon tonight at 7:30 p.m. e.s.t.
    All of the merchandise being distributed comes via the company's Surplus Goods Donation Program from its New Jersey and Yonkers, N.Y. stores.  The Bradlees store in Petersburg, which suffered no damage during the tornado, has also undertaken several fund raising efforts in conjunction with local relief organizations.  Customers wishing to donate can do so at the store.
