The National Weather Service said very cold air from Canada and Alaska will plunge southward, but the showery nature of the precipitation makes it likely that rainfall and snow amounts will be slight.

``It's going to be more showery,'' weather specialist Bonnie Bartling said. ``It mainly will be very cold weather.''

The Weather Service issued a storm watch for the San Gabriel Mountains San Gabriel Mountains, S Calif., E and NE of Los Angeles, running c.50 mi (80 km) westward from Cajon Pass. The storm could bring small hail as well as winds topping 40 mph in the Antelope Valley, the Weather Service said.

Snow levels today could range between 2,500 feet and 3,500 feet, which could bring accumulating snow to the 3,200-foot Escondido Summit on the Antelope Valley Freeway and to the 4,100-foot Tejon Pass on Interstate 5.

Snow levels are expected to lower to 2,000 feet between tonight and Sunday, falling in some spots as low as 1,500 feet.

Downtown Palmdale is about 2,700 feet in elevation, central Lancaster about 2,400 feet and Pearblossom about 3,100 feet.

Caltrans said it has crews mobilized with snowplows and other heavy equipment, ready to clear snow on north Los Angeles County highways.

The chance of precipitation declines to 20 percent Sunday night.
