To ensure the survey results are accurate, the project staff listed all of the approximately 6,000 businesses in the Sudbury area and then divided them by industry sector. They then randomly selected business from each sector. For instance, if the manufacturing sector of the economy is eight percent then that percentage of businesses is represented in the selection of companies to be surveyed.

The project aims to attract over 200 volunteers and to interview over 150 business representatives. To date over 135 volunteers have interviewed over 90 businesspeople across all sectors of the local economy. Volunteer training and interviews will continue until the end of October. The survey data will form the basis for a report to be released to a community task force at the end of November.

Funding for the project, in cash or in kind, comes from the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce, the Sudbury & Manitoulin Workforce Partnerships Board, the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation, FedNor and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund is a division of the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines in the Canadian province of Ontario, whose purpose is to provide funding and program support to foster economic development in the economically disadvantaged Northern Ontario region.  Corp.

The partnership committee and the leadership team anticipate that the survey results will produce information that will lead to opportunities for change to make our community a better place to retain and expand existing businesses. As Jeanne Warwick Conroy, the chair of the leadership team says, "Our motto is 'Taking Care of Business!' and that is what this project is about."
