"While the attacks of Sept. 11 were not specifically about energy, they served as a painful reminder to us that we are overly dependent on imported energy." Smith said.

New York State is the national leader in implementing green building technology to design environmentally responsible buildings. The technology employs computer modeling to maximize energy efficiency of buildings and materials analysis to ensure a healthy environment for people who live and work in the buildings. Battery Park City's Solaire building, the world's first 'green' residential high-rise, was highlighted in the building management seminar as a 'model of green design. "In the area of environmental sustainability the governor's leadership and vision has been recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council who awarded him its leadership award and the Alliance to Save Energy who gave him the Charles H.
