BP plant death rap.

A SHERIFF has criticised safety at BP's huge Scots petrochemical complex following a worker's death.

It has a thriving textile industry and is an extremely large producer of thread. , Renfrewshire, died when he fell off a ladder at BP's Grangemouth plant in Stirlingshire last November.

A death probe at Falkirk Sheriff Court heard how another employee, Joseph Burns, had urged bosses to fit more safety straps on ladders in the area Mr Shields was working on.

Sheriff Craig Caldwell said: "The absence of safety straps had been highlighted as a potential hazard by Mr Burns."

But, he said, nothing was done.

He added: "I have come to the conclusion that there were reasonable precautions which might have prevented the accident."

BP Grangemouth said: "Since the fatality fa·tal·i·ty

1. A death resulting from an accident or disaster.

2. One that is killed as a result of such an occurrence.
, BP has established even higher standards across the plant."
