BP Announces Names of Six Boston Students Selected To Set Sail Aboard The BP Explorer.

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 10, 2000

BP, one of the world's leading energy companies, today announced the names of six Boston teens selected to sail aboard the BP Explorer which is competing in the BT Global Challenge.

, Amy Kavanah, Dante Poles, Joseph Poles, Amerlay Quaye, and Jennifer Toscano will be introduced at a reception Tuesday, October 10 at the Boston Harbor Hotel at Foster's Pavilion. The winners will then join the BP Explorer's captain and crew for a day of sailing on Thursday, October 12.

To commemorate the BP Explorer's visit to the city, BP created a Boston Sailing Challenge. The company invited students from the Courageous Sailing Center, a program that offers free sailing lessons to inner-city Boston youngsters, to write an essay explaining what they have learned through their involvement in the Courageous Sailing program. The eligible students are between the ages of 16 and 18.

In addition to the introduction of the six winners, a grand-prize winner will also be announced at the reception on October 10. All the participating teens will be selected from an organization or school that serves socially disadvantaged youth.

The Courageous Sailing Center (Courageous), a 501(c)3 public charity established in 1987, is designed to afford every child in Boston with the opportunity to learn the sport of sailing free of charge. Courageous programs teach children between the ages of eight and 18 the importance of self-discipline, decision-making, and teamwork. With each experience on the water, children are left with a sense of camaraderie as well as an appreciation of our natural environment. Courageous youth programs served over 1000 children during 1999.
