BOYS SOCCER BEAT : SAME NAME, 2 GAMES.

There's Jose Freire, Birmingham soccer coach. And then there's Jose Freire, veteran international broadcaster.

In his nine seasons, Freire has built the Braves into one of the most consistent City Section teams. This year is no different - after Birmingham's 2-0 Northwest Valley Conference victory over San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina

on Wednesday the defending conference champ is 7-0 and ranked No. 5 in the Daily News Top 10.

When he's not running drills, Freire is an L.A. radio and television sports correspondent, beaming broadcasts of Dodgers, Angels and now Galaxy games to his native Ecuador.

``I go to all the games,'' he said. ``I've been doing baseball on the radio for 24 years.''

The native of Guayaquil (about 100 miles southwest of the nation's capital Quito) has a new beat - Major League Soccer's Galaxy, which just completed it's second season. He has little excuse to be scooped by the competition - Galaxy head coach Octavio Zambrano Octavio Zambrano (born February 3, 1958 in Guayaquil, Ecuador) is a soccer coach, one of the all-time winningest coaches in Major League Soccer history.

``I know Octavio,'' Freire said. ``He's supposed to come to one of our games, sometime.''

Marmonte mix-up

So, what happens when the area's top-ranked soccer team shows up for its game and nobody's there?

It happened Wednesday, sort of, when Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  was to host Channel Islands in the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. It turns out the Raiders never heard that Simi Valley switched starting times this season from 5:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The game was eventually postponed, probably to Jan. 12.

The mix-up couldn't come at a worse time for the No. 1 Pioneers, who host No. 3 Royal today at 2:30 p.m. The team hasn't been in a match since winning the Lancaster tournament over the weekend and hasn't played on their new, 75-yard-wide field since a playoff game Noun 1. playoff game - one game in the series of games constituting a playoff

Not a great way to prepare for the league rival.

``I almost felt like playing their JVs,'' Simi Valley coach Rob Looyen said. ``Now I hope we can get enough bounces our way (against Royal) and win the game.''

Tough break

It was not the way former Daily News Player of the Year Pete Vagenas wanted it to happen, but the ex-St. Francis star will take his NCAA NCAA

championship after watching from the bench during UCLA's 2-0 victory over Virginia on Sunday in Richmond, Va.

Vagenas, who played a major role in the Bruins' midfield, hurt his right ankle during UCLA's quarterfinal victory over Clemson the week before. He spent hours in the training room leading up to the Final Four but was unable to play.

``It's killing me, not being out there,'' said Vagenas, a sophomore.

Other locals on the Bruins' title team: sophomore defender Nick Paneno (La Canada), junior defender Adam Cooper Introduction

Etc.

All-Tourney honors: The Burroughs All-Tournament team - Sean Gesell and Josh Montgomery (Royal), Miguel Meneses and Rob Honicky (Burroughs), Justin Canel and Armando Nila (Crespi), Claudio Basaez (St. Francis), Jeremy Hetzel (Kennedy), Zack Schwartz (Harvard-Westlake), Rick Zeller (Valencia).

Bumps and bruises: The early-season struggles of Crespi (3-2) are not purely tactical. The Celts The following pages provide lists of nations or people of Celtic origin, arranged by branch of Celtic ethnicity or language grouping:

Scoring pains: Palmdale coach Claudia Cline said her Falcons have been struggling to score goals. If there's a dispute, note that the team's leading scorer is sweeper Kim Britton (5 goals), who has been asked to play striker the last two games to bolster offensive opportunities. ``It's a lack of personnel,'' Cline said. ``We only have one true forward.''

Color me bad: It's a frightening trend, first seen `in America on the feet of U.S. national team midfielder Thomas Dooley and repeated on area pitches - colored cleats. In a two-day span, golden-painted shoes were spotted on San Fernando midfielder Emanuel Tovar, while two Crespi players - Tim Clunen and Ryan Baker - were seen in fluorescent yellow boots. Maybe it makes them faster.
