Sylmar coach Emanuel Martins has given nearly every player on the team a try at kicking the penalty shots, but none has worked. The Spartans have made less than half, with Monday's being the most costly.

Jose Lazcano's kick went off the left post midway through the second half and visiting Sylmar tied Reseda 0-0, keeping the Regents half a game ahead of the Spartans for the Valley Mission League title with one game remaining.

Sylmar (18-5-4, 5-3-1) had many more chances, with eight shots on goal to Reseda's two, but Corereas made some great saves to keep the game scoreless. The best was a diving A DIV Associate of Divinity  stop of a shot by Sylmar's leading scorer, Ernesto Lopez.

``I should have made one of them,'' Lopez said. ``It wasn't the goalkeeper, it was that I shot to the center and not at the sides.''

Sims nearly got Reseda on the board in the first half, breaking too easily through the Sylmar defense to accept the pass on a free kick but pushing the ball wide.

``They are a one-man show with Willie and we shut him down,'' Martins said. ``We had all the chances today. It's ridiculous that we can't put the ball in the back of the net.''

If Reseda beats visiting San Fernando on Thursday, the Regents will win the league title. But if San Fernando wins and Sylmar beats visiting Van Nuys, the Spartans and San Fernando will finish as co-champions and Reseda would drop to third. Sylmar holds the tiebreaker tie·break·er
