The Valencia boys' basketball team expected a challenge from Lancaster when the two met at the Canyon Summer League last week, given Lancaster's team speed and athleticism.

However, after a relatively competitive first 10 minutes, Valencia took control and cruised to a 77-31 win.

``Lancaster has more team speed, but we read the floor well,'' Valencia coach Rocket Collins said.

Valencia put together an 11-0 run in the last four minutes of the first half to go into the intermission up 38-14 and then opened the second half with a 17-3 run to put the game out of reach.

Scott Domingo, Alan Husted and Curtis Dunwoody combined to score all of those points during the devastating dev·as·tate

Canyon held a 24-23 edge at halftime and pushed it to a four-point advantage seven minutes into the second half before Notre Dame's offense came alive. Notre Dame was able to get to the line and sink free throws and cause three turnovers on the defensive side to capture the lead and extend it to 37-34 with eight minutes left in the game. Canyon missed a 3-pointer, tightened its defense and got the ball back only to miss another long jump shot. Notre Dame missed two free throws down the stretch, giving Canyon a valuable opportunity. However, the Knights stole the ball back on the other end as Canyon tried to swing the ball around the perimeter.

With less than 20 seconds left, Notre Dame hit a free throw to push the lead to four. Canyon sealed the loss with a traveling call.

--Problems at the line: Both Alemany and Saugus have been inconsistent in their performances at the Canyon Summer League, but both teams played well last week. It was a tight game until the last five minutes, when Saugus missed two front ends of one-and-ones and Alemany capitalized Capitalized

``It showed this game how important free throws are,'' Saugus guard Shant Bicacki said. ``Our focus or concentration isn't there and coach has stressed that free throws are going to win or lose a game.''

With a two-point lead and seven minutes left, Alemany scored on five straight possessions. Saugus kept the score close with 3-pointers but was down by seven on two occasions. The Centurions missed free throws down the stretch and Alemany was able to hold on to their lead.

The week before, Saugus recorded a double-digit win over Alemany of Mission Hills in the Hot Summer Nights Tournament.
