BOYS BASKETBALL : CHAMINADE SLIPS PAST NO. 5 HART.

Byline: Daily News

With all the pre-season hype surrounding the Collins' twins at powerful Harvard-Westlake, the big question is whether or not any Mission League team can step up and challenge the talented Wolverines.

It's still early, but Chaminade is showing signs of being the type of team that might surprise.

The Eagles improved to 2-0 on the young year Wednesday with a 54-51 win over No. 5 Hart in the second round of the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  Tournament.

The impressive start is surprising in that Chaminade had played thus far without its best player - 6-foot-5 forward Scott Long - who was nursing a hip injury. But in his absence some others have played well. None more so than sophomore point guard Cayce Cook, a transfer from Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. Although he stands at 5-8, Cook showed speed and poise while scoring nine points and dishing out a team high nine assists.

``My role is to get everyone involved and not really worry about my scoring,'' said Cook, who is particularly impressive with penetration drives to the basket and dish-off assists to front court players Brett Brownson (16 points), Matt Chirba and Justin Stewart - both of whom scored 10 points.

``We've made it a goal this year to beat (Harvard-Westlake),'' Cook said. ``Right now we don't really miss Justin, so when we get him back it will be like a bonus and we'll be the much better.''
