Byline: Patricia Farrell Aidem Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Today, he's a top executive with Santa Clarita's most influential company, but Tom Dierckman's roots are on a basketball court at a Boys & Girls Club Girls Club is a 2002 American television series created by David E. Kelley, who was also it's producer and executive producer. Only two out of a total of thirteen episodes created were broadcast on Fox Television in the United States and Global Television in Canada.  in Indiana.

It was at that club that Dierckman, senior vice president of The Newhall Land and Farming Company The Newhall Land and Farming Company is a land management company based in Valencia, California, United States. The company is responsible for the master community planning of Valencia, as well as the management of farm land elsewhere in the state. , honed his leadership skills while developing a sense of community service. It was there ...

``He is about as passionate as you can get about the Boys & Girls Club,'' said Judy Belue, director of development for the club's Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  chapter.

Dierckman, installed Thursday night as the president of the board of the local club, gets much of the credit for raising nearly $6 million toward a new Canyon Country clubhouse planned at Sierra Vista Junior High School.

The club will break ground this month under a joint project with the city of Santa Clarita and the William S. Hart Union High School District. The new 27,000-square-foot facility is due to open in spring 2003, Belue said.

``He's the point person and the energy and the driving force behind raising the money for Sierra Vista,'' Belue said. ``He's made it happen.''

The Santa Clarita Valley chapter of the Boys & Girls Club of America boasts 1,500 members who pay $12 a year to take part in a program that stresses community service and team activities. The new clubhouse is expected to bring in 1,000 more young people.

``This project is taking the whole club to a new level,'' Dierckman said. ``We'll have double the facilities, double the budget.''

The club is there for kids in need of supervision and friendship after school; for ``at-risk'' kids who can benefit from the sports, music, crafts and leadership programs offered by the club; and for anyone else looking for Looking for

``It's for kids looking for a place to play ball, to make friends, to do something out of school that is positive,'' Dierckman said.

Dierckman knows. He grew up playing basketball at the club in Shelbyville, Ind. When he moved West, the values he learned as a boy steered him back to the Boys & Girls Club, this time as a leader.

``I grew up in Hoosier hysteria Hoosier Hysteria is the state of excitement surrounding the Indiana high school basketball tournament. In part, the excitement stemmed from the inclusion of all Indiana high schools in the same tournament, where a small town's David might knock off a large city's Goliath. ,'' he said. ``You either played basketball or you watched basketball. Our club had a gymnasium and we had a great executive director. I got to very close to him. It was a great place to grow up.''

Dierckman's first challenge as president is to help replace $250,000 promised from the state for the Sierra Vista project, but cut from the budget by the governor. The club is seeking additional grant funding and private donations, said Jim Ventress, the club's executive director.

``The board is meeting on how we're going to come up with that money, but we are going to move ahead with construction,'' Ventress said.

Also this year, the club expects to qualify for a Microsoft Corp. program that supplies computers and software for members, as well as training for the staff, Ventress said.

And the club will continue its partnership with California Institute of the Arts California Institute of the Arts
