Second-seeded La Canada (19-11) defeated third-seeded Mira Costa (23-8) 5-4 in overtime this season despite the absence of coach Larry Naeve for much of the match. Naeve didn't arrive until the end of the third quarter after riding to the match on a bus with La Canada's underclass teams that was delayed in traffic.

On Wednesday, it was La Canada's offense that got off to a late start. Mira Costa broke a 1-1 first-quarter tie with four consecutive goals to open a 5-1 lead with 2:22 left in the second quarter. La Canada's Eric Murphy ended the drought with a goal with 46 seconds remaining before halftime, but Mira Costa sophomore Cole Consani responded with the third of his four goals 13 seconds later for a 6-2 halftime lead.

The loss denied La Canada, which won the 1999 section title, its second title-game appearance in four years. ``The biggest thing about our game has always been consistency, and it really didn't click today,'' La Canada senior 2-meter man Peter Blanton said.

Things only got worse in the second half, when senior driver Stephen Neville, who scored the Spartans' first goal, was sidelined for the final two minutes of the third period because of a bloody nose after receiving a blow to the face.

``I think they were a much different team,'' Neville said. ``They were much more aggressive on offense and shut us down on defense. We couldn't do anything on offense. They were dominating on every aspect of the game. That's what hurt us. I think it's a huge momentum builder if you score the first goal of the game, and they went on from there.''

Mira Costa goalie Ronnie Giery kept La Canada in check with 13 saves, four in the final period.

``Seaver is just a great water polo player,'' Los Altos coach Tom MacKinlay said. ``We had to drop two defenders on him because he came on strong early. We forced longer shots, and that ended up being the difference.''

Without Seaver for extended periods of time, the Rebels relied on Mike Detoy, who scored six goals and added two steals. Teammate Alex Sangiovanni had 15 saves to keep the Rebels close throughout.

``They were a very aggressive team,'' Flintridge Prep coach Sam Vierra said. ``I thought we played good defense, but some calls didn't go our way.''
