BOYS' WATER POLO NOTEBOOK: H.-W. WANTS MORE YOUNG GROUP HAS TITLE HOPES; LOYOLA STRONG.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

Eric Vreeland arrived at Harvard-Westlake of Studio City as part of a group of successful young water polo players This is a list of water polo players:

who wanted to be like the Wolverines' older players. Those older role models included five players from last year's lineup who went on to NCAA NCAA
abbr.
National Collegiate Athletic Association
 Division I college programs.

But after last season, Vreeland grew determined not to be like those who came before him.

Vreeland and his fellow returnees, who open the season today as the No. 2 team in Southern Section Div. I, want a section title, something Harvard-Westlake hasn't been able to obtain in more than a decade despite talent-rich lineups. Seeing last year's All-American seniors leave without a title reinforced the notion of how difficult it is to win a championship and makes this year's Wolverines hungry to win now even though most of them will be back next year.

``That is definitely running through a lot of our heads,'' said Vreeland, a junior third-year varsity player looking to lead the new crop of starters. ``We had the same team last year that we had two years ago, but we didn't go as far.

``We know as seniors you have a lot of other things going on. You're thinking about getting into college and things like that that can make it more difficult. So that's one of the good things about us all being younger. A lot of us are thinking we want to win this year. We know if we don't win this year, we could experience the same thing last year's seniors did - next year could be worse.''

Harvard-Westlake was eliminated in the Div. I semifinals last season after returning almost the entire lineup that reached the final the previous year. The Wolverines have advanced at least as far as the semifinals four of the past five years but haven't won a section championship since 1991.

``We've got to win this year,'' said Harvard-Westlake coach Rich Corso, who sees his team being among a handful capable of winning the division. ``We don't want to wait 'til next year.''

This year's title hopes are in the hands of a group short on seniors but not on experience. The Wolverines' nucleus of Vreeland - one of three left-handed shooters on the team - junior goalkeeper Jay Connolly, junior Will Hindle-Katel and sophomore Brian Flacks have been club teammates since elementary school elementary school: see school. . They've won age-group national titles, including one this summer at the Junior Olympics, where Vreeland was named the 16-and-under MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip. .

Harvard-Westlake's biggest threat within the Mission League will likely be a Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  team headed by a staff familiar with the Wolverines' ways. Loyola head coach Michael Crosby and one of his assistants are 1998 graduates of Harvard-Westlake. As juniors, they were part of the last Wolverines team not to win a league title - they finished second to Loyola- and now want to be a part of seeing Harvard-Westlake denied again.

The speedy Cubs feature 10 seniors as well as All-American junior hole set Mike Lennon.

Another team loaded with experience and high expectations is Rio Mesa of Oxnard in the Pacific View League. The Spartans went undefeated in league and posted a 20-game winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins
streak, run - an unbroken series of events; "had a streak of bad luck"; "Nicklaus had a run of birdies"
last season while earning the league's first postseason victory in the sport. Now, with 10 seniors, the Div. IV team wants more.

``Our goal last year was to make quarterfinals,'' Rio Mesa coach Keith McKnett said. ``We did that. This year we're hungry. We want a CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF).  title. I remind them constantly.''

The Spartans' outlook was boosted by All-Southern Section senior Justin Burdine-Ortega's recent decision to remain with the team. Last year's leading scorer had considered not playing so he could focus on qualifying for the senior nationals as a swimmer. League MVP Tyler Owens, All-Southern Section goalie Vinny Ferro and Brando Pozzi are other key returnees in a lineup ranked third in the division behind Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  and San Marcos San Marcos (săn mär`kəs).

IV contender: Newbury Park, with returning senior stars Robbie Bauer and Daniel Carson, is an early favorite for its first league title and a deep postseason run.

But with talent being as widespread as change in this league, no one is counting out anyone. Moorpark joins the league for its first year of varsity competition and three others - Agoura, Newbury Park and Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964.  Agoura returns only one starter, senior Mike Koplan, and perennial power Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  has its youngest group in years with only two returning regulars. However, both teams should be in the running with Thousand Oaks, Calabasas and improving Westlake for a playoff berth.

``I think everybody's good from top to bottom,'' said Newbury Park coach Jim McMillan, who joins the Panthers after 12 years as an assistant at Pepperdine. ``It's a real good league. ... We have a long way to go before we're favorites.''

Malibu hopes to be in the Div. IV race despite graduating the core of last year's starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .
