BOYS' WATER POLO: C.V. OVERCOMES SLOW START.Byline: HEATHER GRIPP Staff Writer LA CRESCENTA -- The Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. VI playoffs Tuesday at Burbank High, but the Falcons were still good enough to cruise to a 14-5 victory over Loara of Anaheim. ``We made too many mistakes,'' Crescenta Valley coach Jan Sakonju said. ``The good news is we come away with a win.'' Maintaining what Sakonju calls a recent trend of slow starts, the Falcons were tied midway through the first period and led 6-1 at halftime before putting the game out of reach in the third quarter. Jin Kim led Crescenta Valley (19-9) with a game-high five goals. Mason Hawthorne added three goals and Andrew Martinez Andrew Martinez (November 15 1972 – May 18 2006) achieved fame at the University of California, Berkeley, in the United States, as The Naked Guy. Early fame contributed two, both in the third quarter. Joe Park's goal with 3:35 left in the first quarter put the Falcons ahead for good at 2-1. By the fourth quarter, even Crescenta Valley goalie Sam Blum got in on the scoring, firing a full-court shot that dropped in over Saxons goalie Daniel Judge for Blum's third goal of the season. Blum also made 15 saves, anchoring a defense that held Loara scoreless in the second and third quarters. Davis Lombardo, who scored all three of his goals in the fourth quarter, was the only Loara player with multiple goals. ``We played a bad game today,'' Kim said. ``We need to communicate a lot better. ... If we can put it together, this is our best chance to win it all.'' Crescenta Valley, which dropped from Div. III to Div. VI this season, is aiming for its first Southern Section championship and first appearance in a final since losing to La Canada in the 1999 title game.
