BOYS' WATER POLO: AGOURA TOPS ROYAL TO SHARE MARMONTE.

Byline: HEATHER GRIPP Staff Writer

In a showdown of the top two teams in the Southern Section Div. IV rankings, Agoura defeated No. 1 Royal of Simi Valley 6-5 on Friday at Rancho Simi Rancho San José de Nuestra Senora de Altagarcia y Simi is one of the land grants in California by the Spanish government. The Highlanders, who beat the Chargers earlier in the season, hadn't lost at home all season and hadn't lost to Agoura since the Chargers won their last league title in 2002.

Although the teams split their season series and are officially league co-champions, Agoura won a coin flip for the higher seed in the postseason.

``We are amazed,'' said Chargers senior Alex Thompson, who scored a game-high three goals. ``We are psyched. We are pumped. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Royal's only lead of the afternoon was on the game's initial score, a penalty shot by Barry Snyder with 5:53 left in the firstquarter.

Snyder evened the score at 5-5 with his second goal of the game. But just 23 seconds later, Agoura's Peter Kurzeka propelled himself high out of the water and spun around to fire what would be the final goal of the game with 1:43 remaining in the third quarter.

Several missed shots by Royal (24-4, 11-1), including two in the final minute, and a much-improved Agoura (24-4, 11-1) defense were the difference from the team's previous meeting.

``The key was completely defense,'' Litvak said. ``Our defense was unbelievable today. This game was all heart and defense. It was a team defensive effort, we didn't win this on offense.''

Justin Kovanis, who scored twice, and Thompson were the only Chargers with multiple goals.
