BOYS' VOLLEYBALL NOTEBOOK: OAKS STOPS ITS TOP RIVAL.

Byline: Sean Ceglinsky Staff Writer

Few boys' volleyball are more intense than that between Oaks Christian of Westlake Village and Oak Park, the top programs in Southern Section Div. IV.

The top-ranked Lions demonstrated Tuesday they remain the team to beat with a five-game Frontier League The Frontier League, based in Troy, Illinois, is a professional, independent baseball organization located in the Midwestern United States and Western Pennsylvania. ``Theres a lot of personal pride on the line when we play them,'' Oaks Christian's Alex Walker Alex Walker (born 25 April 1984 in Bellshill) is a Scottish professional footballer. He currently plays for Scottish Football League club Greenock Morton as a midfielder.

Before joining Morton he played for Clyde and Rangers.
said. ``The games are always heated. A win is always nice, but when it's against Oak Park, we all end up with even bigger smiles on our faces.''

Oaks Christian (10-2 overall, 5-0 Frontier) and Oak Park (16-7, 3-2) could meet again in the Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Another showdown in the playoffs, likely in the title match, is a strong possibility. There are few, if any, teams in the division that match up with either.

``We don't want to say that theres a hatred between us, because we respect each other,'' Oaks Christian coach George Hees George Harris Hees, PC , OC (June 17 1910 - June 11 1996) was a Canadian politician.

Born in Toronto to a patrician family, Hees earned a playboy image during his youth, but then became a stalwart member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada.
said. ``Maybe animosity is a better way of putting it. We wouldn't be surprised if we were playing them in the title game when all is said and done.''

--Valley supremacy: Taft of Woodland Hills (6-1, 4-0) rallied from a 20-25, 23-25 deficit Monday to defeat Granada Hills in five games and move into sole possession of first place in the West Valley League, ahead of the Highlanders (6-1, 3-1) and Chatsworth (5-2, 3-1).

``We still feel like we're the No. 3 team in (the) league,'' Taft coach Armen Mercado For the hispanic surname "Mercado", please see de Mercado.

Mercado first originated in Spain. In English it means 'market'.

Four-time defending City Section champion Chatsworth likely poses the biggest threat to Taft. ``There's a lot of parity in our league,'' Chatsworth coach Greg Saltzberg said.

--Underrated underclassmen: Village Christian of Sun Valley (5-1) has climbed to No. 6 in the Div. IV rankings this week thanks in part to the play of sophomore setter setter: see sporting dog.

``I was initially concerned with having to rely on these young guys but have been pleasantly surprised,'' Crusaders coach Bill Schnobrich said. ``They've stepped up. They're growing in leaps and bounds. We'll go as far as these guys will take us.''

The Crusaders open Olympic League play today at L.A. Baptist of North Hills and have games next week against No. 3 Valley Christian of Cerritos and No. 5 Brentwood.

--One man show: Recording 30 kills in a match has become almost the norm for La Canada senior Mike Gaudino, who has efforts of 39, 34 and 35 this season. The Spartans have played only seven contests.

The 6-foot-4 Gaudino needed only four games Tuesday to amass 35 kills in a Rio Hondo Rio Hondo may refer to:

He committed only two errors and finished with a superb .600 hitting percentage.
