These were some of the ways City boys' volleyball coaches spent the past two weeks trying to stay fresh while awaiting word they can play again.

The Laidlaw bus drivers' strike hasn't ended, but the City said last week seasons can resume today.

Area coaches rejoiced, credited their players for maintaining positive attitudes and shared how they adjusted their practice schedules.

At El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

 High of Woodland Hills, coach Aimee Sturges organized a mini-tournament, complete with pools and playoffs. Five teams of five players (JV and varsity on each team) competed.

Teams named each other, with embarrassment the intent. One team, with a pair of 6-foot-4 experienced players, Aaron Cowan and Nick Erin, got named ``Twinkletoes.''

At Granada Hills, coach Tom Harp Tom Harp was a college football coach at Cornell, Duke, and Indiana State. From 1961 to 1965, he coached at Cornell, where he compiled a 19-23-3 record. From 1966 to 1970, he coached at Duke, where he compiled a 22-23-1 record.  went to the library and brought back old drills. Often, he incorporated those into scrimmages, such as teams can only set the ball. No blocking, digging or hitting.

Chatsworth also increased the number of scrimmages, but coach Greg Saltzberg credited three junior-varsity players, freshman setter setter: see sporting dog.
