BOYS' VOLLEYBALL NOTEBOOK: BERMAN GETS EMOTIONAL FOR HIGHLAND.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Staff Writer

Golden League boys' volleyball teams mirror their coaches. If the coach is emotional, the players follow.

Highland coach Tom Jones is calm and wishes his players were more emotional. They're not, but last week against Lancaster, they showed some spark and it helped the Bulldogs maintain first place.

Rarely does a coach say he likes to see his team ``up and down'' because it often means a team rides momentum and can't pull the momentum back once the other team has it. But Jones said seeing his team up and down pleased him.

Lancaster coach Blake Stanford also was impressed.

``Their setter takes over the game,'' Stanford said. ``He's the best high school setter I've seen. His jump-serve took us out of the game (Berman had four aces). Every ball was right there for the hitters to hit.''

Mount is a junior now and one of the team's leading hitters.

Burnham suggested the added maturity and strength might benefit Stewart, but now he has to sell himself. Jones said Stewart is low-key off the court and hasn't yet made a tape of himself.

``People should give him a look,'' Jones said.
