PLAYER OF THE YEAR

MIKE GAUDINO

La Canada, Sr., OH

Opponents were fully aware that the ball was going to be set in his direction, yet very few teams figured out a way to stop Gaudino, who put together several remarkable individual efforts and almost single-handedly carried the Spartans to the best season in program history.

The 6-foot-2 captain finished with 657 kills in 83 games, a mark that is believed to be the highest total in the state - and nation, for that matter - according to according to

``If someone would have told me that I was going to have a season like this, I wouldn't have believed them,'' said Gaudino, who plans to head to Cal State Northridge in the fall.

Gaudino was a model of consistency throughout his senior year with 10 matches of 30 or more kills and fourmatches with 40 or more, highlighted by a career-high 49 against SanMarino in mid-April. He finished with fewer than 20 kills in just three matches this season.

In addition to a .450 hitting percentage, Gaudino added 49 aces and 46 blocks this season. He finished his four-year varsity career with more than 1,700 kills, was a four-time all-league selection and won Most Valuable Player honors as a junior and senior.

Coach of the Year

TOM HARP Tom Harp was a college football coach at Cornell, Duke, and Indiana State. From 1961 to 1965, he coached at Cornell, where he compiled a 19-23-3 record. From 1966 to 1970, he coached at Duke, where he compiled a 22-23-1 record.

With the help of assistant Donald Puaphasnanon, Harp, who is in his 22nd year, guided the Highlanders (16-1) to the program's first City Section championship in nine years, rallying from a two-game deficit to clinch the title against Taft of Woodland Hills.

The 6-foot-2 All-City first-teamer averaged a team-best 15 kills per match and was as significant a reason as any for the success of the Conquistadores of Woodland Hills, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the City Section playoffs for the first time in the program's history.
