BOYS' VOLLEYBALL: VALENCIA TOO MUCH FOR CANYON NO. 1 VIKINGS BEAT COWBOYS BUT IN UNSPECTACULAR FASHION VALENCIA 3, CANYON 0.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - The rhythm of a boys' volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. Points scored in bunches.

A volleyball match without rhythm, such as Valencia's 15-7, 15-5, 17-15 Foothill League victory Thursday against visiting Canyon, can seem like it lasts an eternity, even when it lasts just an hour and 15 minutes, as this match did.

``Not a lot of excitement at all,'' said Valencia outside hitter Tony Ker, who led all hitters with 14 kills.

Neither team looked sharp, but the Vikings (15-2, 3-0), ranked first in the Southern Section Division I poll, overcame their sluggishness to demonstrate they are the team to beat in the league.

Canyon, meanwhile, showed the Vikings it's better than they thought. The Vikings thought with the Cowboys cowboys, in American history.

having lost all of their starters from last year, they wouldn't mount much of a challenge. Instead, the Cowboys (5-3, 2-1) were especially effective in the middle, with Kyle Waite and Kyle Sword combining for 13 kills and nine blocks.

Ryan Spilman led the Cowboys with 11 kills, and Brian Adams Brian or Bryan Adams can refer to any of the following people

, the usual kill leader, had nine.

``The third game, we picked it up,'' Canyon coach Dave Gutierrez said. ``We were able to involve the middles. Valencia has a great defense on the outside. When we ran the middle, they couldn't get over in time.''

But with any attack through the middle, the passing must be crisp and exact, especially with a new setter setter: see sporting dog.

. It wasn't, making it a long match for Canyon's Eric Rubin. Sometimes, an easy serve proved challenging. Rubin didn't help himself, either, committing eight lifts, including seven on sets.

``Volleyball's a game of errors,'' Gutierrez said. ``Offensively, we can play with this team. Defensively, I think we can play with this team, but we make too many dumb mistakes.''

That helped Valencia, but even without the assistance, the Vikings weren't themselves. Not like their match against Saugus on Tuesday, when they not only swept but gave up 13 points in three games.

Ker had just seven kills through two games Thursday. Outside hitter David Pauls, the strongest hitter, had 12 kills but sat on the bench for most of the third game.

Brian Edwards (out with an injured foot), didn't run the offense with any flourish, which helped Canyon outblock the Vikings 11-5.

Yet Canyon being underestimated by Valencia played a role, too.

``Canyon came out better than we expected,'' Ker said. ``But even though Canyon was better, I still didn't think we played as good as we can.''
