It almost was too much for Valencia outside hitter Chris Haigh.

``I'll probably go home and cry, I'm so happy,'' Haigh said after a match-high 20-kill, 14-dig effort. ``It's the first time we beat Canyon (actually, the second). The dream's finally come true. I dream about it every night, every practice. It's all about beating Canyon.''

Canyon (20-6, 6-2) had won the last two league titles and the Cowboys cowboys, in American history.

thought they could sweep through the league again this season. The streak reached 23 consecutive league matches before Valencia (25-4, 7-1) won last week.

But actually, the Cowboys had been in trouble before that. Their best hitter, Jesse Alo, had been slumping. Then the team drew a difficult bracket In programming, brackets (the [ and ] characters) are used to enclose numbers and subscripts. Against Valencia this season, they didn't come to play until it was either too late or almost too late.

``It seems like Valencia gets up for us and we get down,'' Canyon coach Dave Gutierrez said. ``Valencia's sharper against us. They play their best against us. Valencia's gotten better every time.''

In the first meeting April 3, Valencia had match point before Canyon came back to win in five games.

On April 26 and on Tuesday, the Vikings won the first two games easily before the Cowboys woke up. Last month, Canyon won the third game 15-2. On Tuesday, the Cowboys trailed 9-2 before rallying and again denying Valencia at match point.

This time, unlike the April 3 match, the Vikings regrouped in the fourth game and turned a 6-5 Canyon lead into victory.

No Canyon player got more than Alo and Fernando Martinez's 11 kills. Martinez had 12 digs, and Alo and Marcos Borja had 11 digs each.

straightened out,'' said Valencia outside hitter Corey Feldt, who had 13 kills, ``and we had to put people away. There was no stopping us then.''

With one league game remaining Thursday, both teams have qualified for next week's playoffs, Valencia in Division I and Canyon in the more challenging Division II. Gutierrez can only hope his team comes more ready to play.

``I thought we were making mental errors, making dumb mistakes, mistakes we don't make in practice, mistakes we don't make against other teams,'' Gutierrez said. ``Bad choices, net mistakes at bad times. In the first game, we served five balls out. I can't coach that. The guys have to figure it out.''
