SANTA MONICA Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries.  -- The Paraclete of Lancaster and Santa Monica boys' volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. III semifinal knowing very little about each other.

They got to know each other pretty well Wednesday night as Paraclete pushed top-seeded Santa Monica to five games, but fell short, losing in five games 16-25, 25-22, 25-23, 19-25, 15-6.

All Santa Monica knew of Paraclete is that it was from the Olympic League, as were the past two opponents the Vikings had faced.

The Spirit was relegated to asking former opponents about the Vikings.

Paraclete won the first game, but Santa Monica (21-8) turned things around with its defense.

Willie Goetz, Ari Feldman and Nick Leonard gave Santa Monica blocks on the first fourpoints of the fifth game to allow the Vikings to take a 4-0 lead.

Paraclete (18-6) never really recovered, and floundered to the finish.

"They knew exactly where we were going, and who we were going to," said Paraclete coach Mike Kelley Mike Kelley could refer to:

The player the Spirit were going to for much of the match was senior Jon Gurr. He was the barometer for his team, and when the 6-foot-4 red-head was fiery, so were the Spirit. But when he wasn't, his team flamed out.

With Paraclete up a game in the match, and leading the second game 18-17, Gurr injured in·jure

With momentum on their side, the Vikings stormed out early and won the third game.

"I think the injury affected me for maybe a half game," Gurr admitted. "I took an Advil and was OK. Their crowd was crazy; I think they got to us a little bit."

With Gurr feeling better, and showing it, the Spirit got back into the match with a run midway Midway, island group (2 sq mi/5.2 sq km), central Pacific, c.1,150 mi (1,850 km) NW of Honolulu, comprising Sand and Eastern islands with the surrounding atoll. Santa Monica will play another Olympic League opponent, Cerritos Valley Christian, in the final.
