``He's already the best high jumper we have,'' coach Kate Cerruti said. ``He might get that record by his senior year if he keeps this going.''

Jimenez is a natural jumper. He's been high jumping since fourth grade, when he joined his grammar school track team. But he hadn't jumped higher than 5-10 before the season began last month.

``I stayed after practice and finally got 5-11,'' Jimenez said. ``There was only one guy left watching, and I asked him if the bar was shaking. He said, no, I cleared it by an inch. The next meet I cleared 6-2. It still seems like a lot whenever I look up at the bar.''

A runner who competes in distance races.
 at Valencia, was offered a presidential scholarship by Long Beach State. The academic scholarship covers tuition and room and board for four years.

Sundberg, who won the Golden League championship in the 800 last year, is juggling five advanced-placement classes with track this season. He would like to continue the sport in college.

He's waiting to hear back from a few more colleges before making his final decision.

``I'm really happy,'' Sundberg said. ``They treat you really good as a presidential scholarship.''
