RUDY BURGESS

Desert, Senior

As often is the case with small-school athletes, Rudy Burgess mostly was unknown in track circles until the Southern Section finals.

But he wasn't overlooked as much as he just turned it on the finals weeks. By the Masters meet, he was a state challenger in the long jump and triple jump.

At the state finals, he had the longest triple jump in the state this year and third-longest in the nation to win the title in 50 feet, 4 1/4 inches. He finished third in the long jump in 23-9 3/4.

The amazing part about Burgess' success in the triple jump is that, until league finals, he hadn't done the event since he was a sophomore. He did the long jump, 100, 400 relay and 1,600 relay all season.

Foot folley

Bryan Rodie's season almost ended days before the Southern Section prelims when he tripped over his sister's shoe on the stairs of their home and fractured his right ankle.

But the Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  800 runner overcame the pain and a cast to continue competing. The injury knocked him back about two seconds from his preinjury time.

All Rodie needed to do was qualify and run one big race at the state finals. That's what he did. With the cast removed and adrenaline drowning out the pain, Rodie ran a 1:51.94, his personal record, to finish fourth in the state.

Only a junior, he should challenge for the state title next year as long as he looks before he steps.

Relays ruined

No matter what happens individually, a constant from year to year is Taft of Woodland Hills having the area's top boys' relay teams and contending for the state title.

With Quincy Watts Quincy D. Watts (born June 19, 1970) is a former American athlete, winner of two gold medals at the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Quincy Watts attended the University of Southern California where he excelled not only as an athlete but also as a wide

as coaches - and three of four pieces from last year's area record-breaking relay teams - this season had the highest expectations.

The team took a hit when top sprinter Noah Smith went down with a fractured foot. Yet, they were among the best in the state in each relay and Smith was returning in the postseason.

Then, in one day, it all crumbled. At the City Section finals, Jarel Bytheway strained his hip during his leg of the 400-meter relay. He dragged his leg to the finish of his 100 meters but the team couldn't make up the deficit, finishing fourth when the top three advanced to the state prelims.

Smith's foot didn't feel well after that race. So, when the 1,600 relay came around, the Toreadors were without Bytheway and Smith. With its depth depleted de·plete

From nowhere

Royal of Simi Valley's Tony Ramirez stepped on the Cerritos College Cerritos College is a public comprehensive community college founded in 1955 located in Norwalk, California. It was named after Rancho Los Cerritos, a ranch that served prominently in the region in the 19th century.  track for the Southern Section finals virtually an unknown outside Ventura County.

He quickly grabbed the crowd's attention with an improbable comeback in the 400 meters. Near the back of the pack with 100 meters to go, he blew by everybody one by one to take first place and the biggest cheer of the day.

``That wasn't my original plan in the race,'' Ramirez said with a laugh. ``I had dead legs. I couldn't turn it on. Then it turned on at the 100-meter mark. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

The next week, he proved it was no fluke by winning the Southern Section Masters title. Ramirez, who didn't make it to the Southern Section finals as a junior, ended up sixth in the state.

Under nine

In cold conditions, with the rain starting to fall consistently, all hope for good times at the end of the Arcadia Invitational seemed to slip away.

But the conditions turned out to facilitate an epic 3,200 meters, in which Monroe of North Hills senior Manuel Ruiz Manuel Ruiz Pérez (born December 3, 1962 in Jerez de la Frontera) is a Spanish football coach and former player.

During his football career, he played for several clubs including his childhood club Xerez CD, UD Melilla and Sanluqueño.
 was right in the middle.

Ruiz ran an 8:55.80, the best time in the area in at least three years. Amazingly, that was only good enough for seventh place in the race as an Arcadia-record 11 runners broke nine minutes.

The race catapulted Ruiz into the state-distance elite, rather than just the top of the City Section. He ended up placing seventh in the state.
