BOYS' TENNIS NOTEBOOK: PALMDALE READY TO CHALLENGE KONRAD, FALCONS SEEK PLAYOFF BERTH.

Byline: Erik Boal Special to the Daily News

With 10 returning lettermen, Quartz Hill High's boys' tennis team doesn't figure to face any serious challenges on its way to a 16th consecutive Golden League title.

The Rebels already have defeated Lancaster and Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
 - last year's second- and third-place finishers - by a combined 33-3 margin.

Although Quartz Hill remains in a class of its own, new challenger in the race for the league's remaining postseason entries might have emerged.

Under the guidance of first-year coach John Konrad, Palmdale won its first two league matches and could join the hunt for a Southern Section Div. III playoff berth come May.

Konrad is no newcomer to developing successful programs, leading Littlerock's girls' tennis team to consecutive Div. IV playoff appearances - with a first-round victory in 2004 - after the Lobos had never previously qualified for the postseason.

During his time at Littlerock, Konrad had success developing doubles teams, and he is achieving similar success at Palmdale.

In a 13-5 victory March 21 over Littlerock, Tyler Coombes Coombes is a hamlet and civil parish in the Adur District of West Sussex, England. It is located three miles (5km) north of Shoreham by Sea on the River Adur. The 11th century village church has frescoes, some of the most important in England, and painted about 1100 A.D.  and Pedro Gonzales played together in doubles for the first time and swept their sets 6-0.

Anthony Bonilla and Tyler Scavo also recorded a sweep in doubles for the Falcons, and Cesar Garcia Cesar Garcia is the Director General of the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency. He is a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy class 1970.  and Jose Gutierrez won two singles sets apiece.

Palmdale's schedule promises to get tougher after spring break, especially with two matches against Quartz Hill remaining.

--Interesting proposal: When the Southern Section released its proposed playoff groupings for the 2007 and 2008 boys' tennis seasons, the Golden League was one of nine leagues to remain in Div. III.

The rest of the proposal was good news/bad news for the Antelope Valley-area schools. The Prep League, featuring both of last year's Div. III finalists in Chadwick of Rancho Palos Verdes Rancho Pal·os Ver·des

A city of southern California on a channel of the Pacific Ocean west of Long Beach. Population: 42,100.
and Pasadena Poly, has been moved to Div. II under the new arrangement. The San Andreas San Andreas is an Anglicisation of the Spanish language San Andrés (Saint Andrew, the Apostle). It may refer to:
  • San Andreas Fault, a geologic fault that runs through California, USA

, Arroyo Valley of San Bernardino and San Gorgonio of San Bernardino, has been dropped to Div. IV.

The vacancies left by the Prep and San Andreas leagues are expected to be filled by the Olympic and Ocean leagues, which are competing this season in Div. IV.

The Olympic League features Brentwood, the defending Div. IV champion, and Campbell Hall Campbell Hall can refer to:
  • a residence hall at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech)
  • Campbell Hall School in North Hollywood, California
of North Hollywood, a semifinalist last season. The Ocean League includes Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities. , a Div A DIV Associate of Divinity . IV finalist last season, and Palos Verdes, which lost to Brentwood in the quarterfinals.

Leagues have through today to lobby Southern Section officials to be moved to another division or appeal the decision if they believed they were unfairly switched.

The Southern Section's playoff groupings committee will meet April 6 to address the appeals, then mail their decisions to league coordinators. Final appeals will be made by leagues before Southern Section officials April 20, with the final vote taking place April 25.

--Nothing but zeroes: In an 18-0 victory March 22 over Antelope Valley, Quartz Hill's Adam Montelongo recorded three 6-0 victories in singles. The Rebels (6-2, 2-0) extended their league winning streak to 153 matches.
