area's most dominant boys' tennis program has never had a singles player boast a resume like the one put together this year by Thacher.

And he still has two years left to add to it.Thacher became Harvard-Westlake's first male tennis player to reach the championship match of the Southern Section individual tournament - and just the 10th area player in 85 years - losing to Orange's Steve Johnson Steve Johnson is the name of:

  • Steve Johnson (basketball) is a former National Basketball Association player.
  • Steve Johnson (Bethel) is the current head coach of Bethel University's football team.
6-3, 7-6 (3) in a contest that featured one service break.

``Obviously, I would've liked to be the only (Harvard-Westlake) person to win it,'' Thacher said. ``But to be the first (finalist) is special because the school has a really storied program for tennis.''Thacher and Johnson joined West Torrance's Jason Jung and Arroyo Grande's Andre Dome in advancing to the semifinals of both the Ojai Valley tournament and the Southern Section draw. Thacher, who put together winning streaks Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

of 25 and 26 sets this season en route to a 52-5 record, suffered a three-set setback to Dome in the final four at Ojai.

After reaching the semifinals of the Southern Section doubles tournament last year with his older brother, Bret, Thacher dominated one quality opponent after another this season in singles, highlighted by a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2) victory over Jung - the Ojai champion - in the Southern Section semifinals.

Thacher didn't drop a set in team competition, leading the Wolverines to a 22-1 record, a Mission League title and a Div A DIV Associate of Divinity . I semifinal appearance.

 AZHAR

Viewpoint

It's hard to believe that Viewpoint's first trip to the Southern Section semifinals was in 2003. Under Azhar, the Patriots have quickly grown used to the spotlight.

Azhar, a physics and math teacher at the Calabasas-based school, continued Viewpoint's winning formula this season, leading the Patriots to their third consecutive Div. V championship.

As much as Azhar has been blessed with talented singles players during the past four seasons, his ability to develop strong doubles teams has been instrumental in the Patriots' success.

Viewpoint, which became only the fourth area boys' tennis team to win three consecutive titles, concluded the season on a 15-match winning streak, capped by a win over Cate in the final.

The Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies (also Sherman Oaks CES or SOCES) is a (magnet) public school in the San Fernando Valley, Southern California, United States.  standout didn't let that stop him from making history, becoming the first tennis player - male or female - from the Reseda-based school to reach the City final. Mkrtchian ran off five consecutive victories in the tournament, before suffering a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Granada Hills' Eric Lee in the championship match.
