BOYS' TENNIS: H.-W. TOPS IN STATE.

Byline: Erik Boal Special to the Daily News

After winning Southern Section Div. I titles the past two seasons, Harvard-Westlake of Studio City's boys' tennis team was recognized as state Team of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports.

The Wolverines didn't win the National High School Tennis All-American Foundation Tournament - considered the most prestigious regular-season high school event in the country - either year, but there was no debate over their selection last May.

Harvard-Westlake defeated last year's tournament champion Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  in the Div. I final and 2004 winner Corona del Mar Del Mar is the name of several places in the United States of America:

The Wolverines defeated Loyola for the division championship.

Torrey Pines Torrey Pines can refer to:
  • Torrey Pine, a broad, open-crowned pine.
  • Torrey Pines Golf Course, a municipal public golf course owned by the city of San Diego, California.
  • Torrey Pines High School, a high school in the North County Coastal area of San Diego, California.
of San Diego's 6-3 victory over Dana Hills of Dana Point in Saturday's NHSTAAF championship match means Harvard-Westlake could have competition when the state's top team is selected at the end of the season.

The 16-team field for this year's tournament was filled before Harvard-Westlake was able to commit, leaving the Wolverines unable to challenge Torrey Pines - the state Team of the Year in 1996 and 2002 - for bragging rights.

``If we played them straight up, it would be a great match,'' Harvard- Westlake coach Chris Simpson Christopher Patrick Simpson (born 9 January, 1982) in Brisbane, Queensland, is an Australian cricketer who plays for the Queensland Bulls in Australian domestic cricket. He is a right arm offbreak bowler and right handed batsman.

18-under division and another three in the top 75 of the 16-under division. ``You look at their roster, and they've got a great team. It would be a very good test for us.''

Harvard-Westlake has won 53 consecutive matches under the Southern Section's standard 18-set format. The Wolverines' only setback since 2003 came in last year's NHSTAAF quarterfinals, a 5-4 loss to Los Gatos Los Gatos (lôs gä`tōs, lŏs, găt`əs), city (1990 pop. 27,357), Santa Clara co., W Calif.; inc. 1887. It is an affluent residential community and health resort. . Harvard-Westlake didn't field its full lineup because of injuries.

The Wolverines have finished fifth in the tournament three times, including 2002 and 2003. They were third in the inaugural event, in 2000.

``We've gone 3-1 every time we've been there, including three times because we got stung in the second round,'' Simpson said. ``Fourth place goes 2-2, and we get fifth and go 3-1, which doesn't make much sense. I'd like to see them go to a pool-play format to ensure the two best teams are playing in the finals.''

--No time to celebrate: Granada Hills waited six seasons to hold sole possession of first place in the West Valley League. Unfortunately for the Highlanders, their run atop the standings lasted less than a week.

Taft of Woodland Hills recorded one of the biggest upsets of the young season Monday by defeating Granada Hills 4-3, the Toreadors' first victory over the Highlanders in six years.

Freshman Josh Tchan defeated Granada Hills' Eric Lee 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 at No. 1 singles to remain undefeated. The Toreadors (3-0 in league) have been surging since a 5-2 nonleague loss to Eagle Rock, which at 8-0 remains the area's only unbeaten City Section team.

That was before Moorpark, which had lost consecutive league matches entering its March 21 showdown with the Coyotes, pulled off a 10-8 upset.

Calabasas (6-2, 5-1) rebounded last Thursday to defeat Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Moorpark, Westlake and Thousand Oaks are 4-2, and Agoura is 3-3. Moorpark plays host to Westlake today and is at Thousand Oaks on Tuesday.
