BOYS' TENNIS: ECR PERFECT TIMES 3 ECR 6, GRANADA HILLS 1.Byline: Lauren Gustus Staff Writer It looked like just another day for the El Camino Real High of Woodland Hills boys' tennis team during its 6-1 victory over visiting Granada Granada, last refuge of the Moors whom the Christian reconquest had driven south; the kingdom occupied the present provinces of Almería and Málaga and parts of Jaén and Cádiz. The concentration of Moorish civilization in Granada gave the city great splendor and made it a center of commerce, industry, art, and science. Hills on Monday. But the win wasn't insignificant. It was the third year in a row the Conquistadores (13-0, 10-0) finished without losing a match in league play. In a rematch of last year's City Section final, El Camino Real dropped just two sets to the Highlanders (11-2, 8-2), whose only losses this season were to the Conquistadores. Senior Bruce Aiken Aiken, city (1990 pop. 19,872), seat of Aiken co., W S.C.; inc. 1835. A resort and polo center and a training area for Thoroughbreds, Aiken has apparel, printing and publishing, drug, and chemical industries. Agricultural products include poultry, livestock, grain, peanuts, cotton, and peaches. Kaolin mines are nearby. A branch of the Univ. of South Carolina is in the city. Nearby is the U.S., El Camino Real's No. 1 singles player, rolled over Granada Hills' No. 1, Phil Gegenheimer, 6-0, 6-0. When Aiken and Gegenheimer first met this season at Granada Hills, windy conditions made for a much closer match. ``I liked it better in the wind,'' said Gegenheimer, after failing to win a point in the first 1 1/2 games Monday. The victory secured Aiken a place among the best tennis players to come out of El Camino Real. Aiken, who hopes to play tennis at USC next year, didn't lose a league match in his high school career. Aiken dropped just one set in league, to Joseph Tchan of Taft of Woodland Hills his freshman year. Although he sat out most of his junior year with a broken thumb, the accomplishment remained significant. ``It's very special,'' Aiken said. ``It just comes from practice and hard work. And the team really backed me up, all the time, coming out and cheering.'' Granada Hills' only point came in the third doubles match, when Jared Novak and Ping Kong defeated Andrew Englestein and Alex Toben 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Granada Hills' Alec Burt and Aram Daufyan took Isaac Adrabi and Chad Gerber to three sets before losing 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 6-2. |
